Summary for 6516 Roosevelt WAY / Parcel ID 3658700045 / Inv # RO008

Historic Name: Hollywood Theater Common Name: Cloud 9 Consignment Shop
Style: Art Deco - Streamline Moderne Neighborhood: Roosevelt
Built By: George Grove (1938) Year Built: 1923

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
In the 1920s every Seattle neighborhood had at least one local theater, where children could walk to the show and the prices were less than at the movie palaces downtown. The Hollywood Theater was built in 1923, just as the Roosevelt business district and the nearby residential areas were undergoing a period of tremendous growth. In 1938 the theater, with William Bedgisoff as the new owner, was updated to the more fashionable Art Moderne style. After the theater closed in the 1950s, it was used as a gym, and it has been a thrift store since the 1960s. Although it is in somewhat deteriorated condition, the Art Moderne features of the 1938 remodel are largely intact, including the tower and marquee.

Appearance
This is a stucco-clad brick building with the entire storefront clad with black ceramic tile. The façade is simple, with a narrow horizontal band above the intact theater marquee. There is a large louvered vent at each side, just above the marquee. The simple marquee still has the letter H on the front, but the theater reader board has been replaced with a sign for the thrift shop. At the southwest corner is a short streamlined set-back tower, typical of Moderne theaters. Large display windows have metal sash; these also date to the 1938 remodel. The north sidee of the building is dominated by a very large mural depicting local history.
