Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.
This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance. This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project.
(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. This is one of a group of two identical houses (plus one other small house) that appears to have been constructed for one owner in 1908. The original owner/builder of this residence has not been identified. All three properties (located in close proximity along Carleton Avenue South) were owned by Guisipi Maniglia by 1937. | Appearance |
| (1997) A partially intact example of a hybrid hipped-roof vernacular house type. This small house type was commonly constructed throughout the American West during the later half of the 19th C and the early decades of the 20th C. This example exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric associated with popular architecture design modes during the late 19th C. and early 20th C: a traditional one-story cottage form accentuated by a large front facing dormer, a full width cut away porch and a combination of original tall, narrow double-hung and cottage type windows with ornamental upper sash. The house is currently clad with asbestos shakes laid over the original narrow clapboard siding. It includes modest features popularly used in Craftsman and Bungalow residential designs during the first two decades of the 20th C: ornate soffitt brackets, heavy bracketed porch columns and prominent porch. The footprint of the principal portion of the house is 27’ x 38’ and includes a small one story rear wing with porch. An original front entry door appears to remain in place. Exterior alterations of note include the replacement of original dormer windows at the front elevation. A portion of the central brick chimney remains in place. A nearly identical house, now heavily altered, was constructed on an adjacent lot. |
