Historic Name: Hutchison, Oscar and Carrie P., House Common Name: Style: Queen Anne, Vernacular Neighborhood: Columbia City Built By: Year Built: 1891   Significance This house was built in 1891 on block 6, lot 141 of the plat of Columbia and may have been one of the twenty houses built by the Washington Co-operative Home Co. The plat of Columbia was filed on August 5th, 1891 at the request of J.K. Edmiston a representative of the Washington Co-operative Home Company. Approximately 32 houses were built in the plat of Columbia between 1891 and 1892. By 1938, only 21 houses built between 1891 and 1892 were still extant in the Columbia plat. This house is one of five houses built between 1891 and 1892 in the plat of Columbia that are extant in the Columbia City historic district. Oscar and Carrie P. Hutchison originally owned the house, according to early tax assessor records, and purchased the house from the Columbia Home Company. Hutchison was the first mayor of Columbia City. In 1916, Harry Dean, and agent of the Oregon Nursery Co., lived in the house. The Minnehaha Co. purchased the house in 1930. Arthur O. Hendrickson lived in the house from 1939 until at least the mid-1950s. This house is significant as one of the few remaining early residential buildings constructed in the Columbia City neighborhood.   Appearance This intact one and a half story vernacular house exhibits Queen Anne style detailing. The house is of wood frame construction and is supported by a concrete foundation. The house has a rectangular plan and a front gable roof form. The roof features three front facing gables of varying size and a smaller cross gable on the west elevation. The front elevation features a cutaway bay window with lace-like brackets. The house has a small inset front porch, which originally featured decorative spindle work. A side entrance porch is located on the east elevation. The house is clad in clapboard siding on the basement and first stories, and fishscale on the half story. The prominent bay window on the west elevation features diagonal and horizontal decorative wood siding. The highest front gable features decorative wood shingle in a half circle motif. The lower front gables originally featured decorative gable end detailing. The fenestration consists of the original one-over-one double hung windows. The windows on the first story are located on the front and side bay windows. The fenestration configuration on the second story consists of a pair of windows on the main front gable, and a single window on the smaller parallel gable. The cross gable, on the west elevation, features a window flanked by smaller fixed pane windows.
