Significance |
|
This sleek one-story building was built in 1948, as construction was beginning to recover after World War II. Although in poor condition, it is a good example of the minimalist International Style, the primary design vocabulary of the 1950s. During this decade, International Style buildings of all sizes became common in Seattle for virtually all commercial and institutional purposes. Because modular construction was economical, the style was often used for government buildings, schools and hospitals as well as high-rises and small office structures like this one. Small commercial buildings in this style are often characterized, as is this one, by expanses of glass, with aluminum window frames. The main façade is almost entirely of glass, with green Vitrolite glass above the storefront. The bulkhead below is a narrow band of polished granite.
