Significance |
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local). |
|
Although altered, this house is included in the survey as a documented, representative work of noted Seattle architect, John Graham. It is also a good example of vernacular architecture as affected by economic prosperity and thus enhances our knowledge of vernacular architecture and residential development in Seattle.
Graham designed this house for Samuel Brown, owner of the San Francisco Shoe Store. R. B. Shepard was the contractor.

Appearance |
This two story hipped roof box is an elaboration of the foursquare form with an eclectic mix of Prairie, Craftsman and Neoclassical elements. Originally, two second story bay windows cut through the eaves on the façade and there is one on the northern elevation. These have been altered. Originally clapboard with stucco at the second level, the house is now clad in asbestos shingles. The asymmetrical hipped roof porch is supported by trios of classical and Craftsman columns (wood shingled square columns). |
