Historic Name: Munson, Mark House Common Name: Munson House Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Queen Anne Built By: Year Built: 1903   Significance In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance. The Munson House was constructed in 1903. In 1901 Illinois native Mark Munson (b. ca 1868) and Welsh wife Mary (b. ca 1868) arrived in Seattle at the beginning of a period of enormous growth in Seattle. Munson worked as a bookkeeper and then for a lumber company before entering the real estate business in 1904. The 1901 and 1902 Polk directory listed Mark Munson as living at 2133 7th Avenue W so there must have been a small structure on the property. On November 24, 1902, the Seattle Building Department issued Munson a permit to build a 26 1/2 x 45 foot dwelling, which Munson completed by late winter-early spring 1903. The building permit listed Munson as the builder but he probably hired carpenters to construct the house. The house provided lots of room for the Munsons because the family included six children ages 9, 6, 5, 3 plus 1 year old twins. In addition to his real estate business Munson also owned a Seattle hotel. The nearest streetcar line was about half a mile away at Prospect and Olympic Place. When the Munsons moved to the University District in 1913 the household had grown to 10. Later occupants. By 1928 H. M. Olsen occupied the house. Ten years later Arthur L. Norman, a machinist for Todd Shipyards, and his wife Verna J. occupied the house. From 1936 through the mid-1950s, W. Rudolph and Clara E. Flinkman lived there. Rudolph Flinkman worked for American Biscuit and Cracker Company as a shipping clerk and later a traffic manager. In 1961 Ozzie’s Restaurant dishwasher Frank B. Harrington lived there. In 1961 Jack Liptrap purchased the house. The residence appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (over 100 years old) and minimal alterations.   Appearance On November 24, 1902, owner Mark Munson acquired a building permit (# 17607) for a 1 1/2 story 26 x 45 foot vernacular Queen Anne style residence. The building size includes what appears to be a rear (west elevation) addition that measures about 11 x 18 feet which includes a six foot wide porch. In 1901 there were building permits issued for two sheds (permit #s 7092 and 9818). The 1905 Sanborn map shows only one shed on the property. The other shed could perhaps be the building addition. The City of Seattle gave 90 days to complete the residence so it was likely completed by February or March 1903. The front and wing gable roof has a slight flare. The wrap around porch with a hip roof is on the east and south elevations. In 1915 most of the porch that extended along the south elevation was enclosed (permit # 141905). A bay window is on the first floor of the east elevation and a two-story three sided bay window is on the south elevation. Nearly all of the double hung windows have a beveled (teardrop) sash.
