The Le Sourd Apartments were designed in 1929 for owner L. W. Le Sourd by Earle Morrison, one of the city's most prominent apartment designers. William C. D. Edwards purchased the building in 1945, changing its name to the Edwards Apartments. It is one of the largest apartment buildings of the period in the Belltown/Denny Regrade vicinity, and one of the few in the area in the Art Deco style that was becoming very popular by 1929. The second Denny Regrade (1929-30), east of Fifth Avenue, was completed just as the Depression began and was occupied primarily by low-density uses such as auto dealerships, with a variety of buildings along 5th Avenue. The storefronts and store interiors have been modernized and the apartment windows have newer vinyl sash.
Architect Earle Morrison (d. 1955) practiced in Spokane before moving to Seattle in 1926. He specialized in high-rise buildings, especially apartments. His major works include the the Textile (now Olympic) Tower, Olive Tower Apartments (1928), 1223 Spring Street Apartments (1929), the Gainsborough (1930), the Nettleton (now 1000 8th Avenue Apartments, 1949) and the Baldwin (now Horizon House, 1955).
