Significance |
|
Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.
This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance. This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project.
(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. This house was designed and built for John Mueller and his family. John Mueller is a particularly significant person in the history of Georgetown. He served as Mayor, Superintendent of the Brewery, Fire Chief, and School Board member. In 1891, when Georgetown was not a well-developed community, Mr. Mueller brought his wife Bertha out from St. Paul. As the train neared Seattle, she noticed some very bedraggled-looking homes, one of which would be her first home. This house replaced the earlier inadequate one and was gradually enlarged to meet the needs of the Mueller family.

Appearance |
A generally well-preserved and prominently sited example of Queen Anne residential design, a popular architectural style used for domestic building during the late 19th C. This historically significant property appears to be a somewhat unusual hybrid example of this style. It was initially constructed (c.1892) as a six-room dwelling and later enlarged to the 13-room residence reflected by its current form. It may be assumed that the most distinctive Queen Anne features were added when the house was expanded presumably in the early 1900s. The residence exhibits a typical late 19th c. hip roof form (the original house form?) along with particularly distinctive design features and historic building fabric, including: multiple (atypical thru the eave) wall dormers (front elevation includes a prominent steeply pitched roof), atypical two-over-one wooden window sash, and a prominent one-story porch (along the width of the original front elevation) supported by sets of three turned posts with segmental arched bays in the Free Classic design mode. The Queen Anne design is further accentuated by tall narrow window openings and variegated cladding (rustic dropped and multiple-patterned shingles) and spindle-work at the front porch, north and west elevations. A flat roof, one-story, historic addition (?) is situated along the south side of the house. Historically it included a Colonial Revival-style X-pattern balustrade. Some window openings and sash have been covered. Portions of two older central brick chimneys appear to remain in place. A narrow open porch with intact spindle-work is situated at the rear of the house. A small wooden garage or shed structure, that may be contemporary with the house, is situated to the rear of the residence. The house was converted to apartments c.1948. |
