Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.
This is a particularly well-preserved historic property that appears to possess architectural and/or historic significance.This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance/historic design character since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project. It has been carefully rehabilitated and preserved. At the time of 2014 field survey, a skilled carpenter was installing new thermal pane, true divided light/multipane window sash.
(1997) This property is associated with an era of residential and commercial building between 1916 and 1942 which continued in Georgetown despite an acceleration of the trends toward the industrialization of the area. Significant changes came with prohibition and the closure of the brewery in 1916, the completion of the Duwamish Waterway in 1917, and the arrival of new businesses, such as the Boeing Airplane Company in 1916. In spite of the increasingly industrial nature of the area which had been zoned as such in 1923, residents of Georgetown continued to build new homes and businesses and to plan for a future in the neighborhood. This house is believed to have been both designed by and built for (James and) Josephine Reeves. James was an engineer with Puget Sound Power & Light, and prior to having this house built, they resided nearby on Carleton Avenue South. They appear to have resided here until c. 1942. The Reeves may have used a standard builder’s plan or an Aladdin type mail order catalog home in the construction of their residence.

| A generally well preserved example of an eclectic cottage similar to the side gable vernacular house type. This house type was commonly constructed throughout the American West during the later half of the 19th C and the early decades of the 20th C. This example exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric that reflect Craftsman/Bungalow style residential design modes popularized during the early 20th C: a one and ½ story cottage form with symmetrically placed entry porch and fenestration, and multi pane (6/1) double hung window sash. The house is clad with original (or restored?) cedar clapboard siding and skirting. It includes other distinctive features drawn from the popular early 20th C Craftsman/Bungalow designs: a low roof pitch with exposed rafter ends, wide barge boards, overhangs & kneebraces, and a central projecting entry porch with prominent gable end (with wide barge board) supported by square columns. An original craftsman style door appears to remain in place. Exterior alterations of note include the modern entry porch handrail and stairs. This residence appears to have been constructed according to a standard builder’s plan or may be an Aladdin type mail order catalog home. |
