Historic Name: Bencoe Co. Inc. Common Name: New Horizons Ministry

Built By: Year Built: 1950

Significance
This concrete building dates from 1950, as construction was recovering after World War II. It is one of a number of buildings constructed during this period at the north edge of Belltown. This area, and the adjacent Lower Queen Anne neighborhood, was relatively underdeveloped and when the post-war economy recovered sufficiently these areas proved to be fertile ground for construction of small commercial buildings. In the 1950s this housed the Bencoe Company, a sporting goods wholesaler. It is a simple example of the Modern/International style, with long banks of aluminum window sash with additional horizontal elements in an aluminum cornice and a projecting course between stories. It now houses a Christian ministry and social service agency serving street youth.
