Queen Anne was largely developed before the era of Modernist construction that began in the 1950s-60s. This is one of the area’s few Northwest Modern homes, built in 1964-65; the architect is not known. It has the distinctive asymmetrical gabled roof and vertical cedar siding. The main living areas are above a daylight basement, with large windows to take advantage of the view. It was designed as a duplex, with a separate living unit on the lower level. It was built for Harold Sternberg, owner of a construction company. Mrs. Helen Sternberg still owns the house today.

Appearance
This Northwest Modern house has an asymmetrical gable roof clad with deep eaves and visible beams. The roof is clad with wood shakes and the exterior with vertical cedar boards. The house sits on a hillside surrounded by trees and shrubs, with a full two stories at the east end and a single story carport and garage at the west. The entry is at the southeast with a shed roof. The north and east elevations have large picture windows; a brise-soleil extends horizontally above the lower windows on these two sides. Windows on the rear (south) and west are wood-frame casements or sliding windows. The east end has a large chimney of rough-faced gray brick or concrete block.
