Historic Name: Butts House Common Name: Butts House
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Rainier Beach
Built By: Year Built: 1904

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
The Butts House was constructed about 1904. Minnesota native Vernon Butts (b. ca 1882) came west with his parents about 1892. The family settled south of Seattle. Seattle Brick and Tile Company gave Vernon Butts one of his first jobs by hiring him as a miner. In 1904, he married Isabella Butts (b. ca 1886), a daughter of Irish immigrants. At about the time they married, Vernon Butts acquired two lots from land developer A. H. Clambey's new subdivision and constructed a house. By early 1905 they were living in the house and remained there for about 40 years. Two children were born and raised in the house; Helen (b. ca 1906) and Edwin (b. 1908). From about 1905 through World War II, the elder Butts worked for a floor company as a cement finisher, foreman, and superintendent. The Butts House appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (over 100 years old) and minimal alterations.

Appearance
The Butts House is a vernacular front gable house. Full width porch on east elevation. Glass enclosed porch in rear west elevation. Most windows double hung. Second floor windows may be aluminum.
