Summary for 914 22nd AVE / Parcel ID 1338800470 / Inv #

Historic Name: Friedman, Harry, House Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1920

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local).
This house is unusual for its bungalow form and Craftsman details with brick cladding, an unusual combination in Seattle. It is also unusual for its late date, 1920, when the Craftsman style was beginning to give way to the revival styles of the 1920s, especially on Capitol Hill. The original owner is not known, but it was purchased by Harry Friedman in 1935. It is well sited on 22nd Avenue E., in Capitol Hill Div. 6, the last of the plats of James Moore, who developed Capitol Hill. The topography falls steeply to the east here, with spectacular views, so many fine homes were built here. The 1937 assessor’s data notes special features of this house, including a built-in library, a tile fireplace and three bathrooms.

Appearance
This side gable house has a typical bungalow form, with brick veneer cladding. The roof has deep eaves, prominent knee brackets and extended rafter tails. A recessed porch with brick piers and arched openings runs along the entire front of the house. The center entry is framed with stickwork; the door is flanked by leaded glass sidelights (newer). The frotn also has two bays with wood surrounds. A wide, shallow shed dormer with three pairs of six-light windows extends along much of the main façade. Most other windows are one-over-one double hung sash. The north elevation has a small square bay and a secondary entry.
