Significance
The Shirley Marvin apartment building was built in 1935. Architect John Mathews designed the building for owner J.L. Wolaver. David W. Brown purchased the building in the mid-1930s. The building was originally heated via boiler located in the Grayson-Brown Building (4860 Rainier Avenue S.). The building is named for Brown’s grandchildren. This intact apartment building is significant as the only example of a brick four-unit block within the Columbia City historic district.
 
Appearance
This two-story, four-unit apartment building is of frame construction and is supported by a concrete foundation. The building has a rectangular plan and a flat roof. The front entry porch has a flat roof and features a central door, leading to the upper floor, flanked by two other doors, leading to the first floor. The two flanking doors are flush with the front elevation, while the central door is located in a shallowly projecting enclosure. The building is clad in brick veneer with a metal cornice. The fenestration consists of large and small one-over-one single hung windows, and large two-pane fixed windows. The front elevation window configuration consists of two large fixed pane windows flanking the porch on the first floor elevation, and a pair of small one-over-one single hung windows flanked by large fixed pane windows.
