Summary for 5511 AIRPORT WAY / Parcel ID 3868400170 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Bertoldi Hall Common Name: Stellar Cafe
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Georgetown
Built By: Year Built: 1903

Significance

Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct historic character of the Georgetown neighborhood. This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance.

(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The building was apparently constructed for Germano Bertoldi (see GT015) and later owned by Albert Bertoldi (son?). Described as a "Tavern and Dance Hall," it is known to have been used as a meeting hall and as a boxing arena (c.1939), and for rooming house and beer parlor purposes.

Appearance
No substantive change to the building form or historic building fabric/features since the 1997 HRI project. A large canvas canopy has been added across the entire storefront level facade. The building appears to be generally well maintained and in active commercial use.

(1997) A noteworthy, however deteriorated and altered, example of early 20th C. meeting and social hall design. Despite extensive alterations, this property continues to exhibit some distinctive design features and intact historic building fabric: a symmetrical floor plan with two retail storefront openings, a distinctive raised (Mission Style) front parapet, a mansard roof cornice with scrolled wooden brackets, original tall narrow window openings, and double-hung sash set independently in a uniform fenestration pattern. The original rustic cladding is currently covered by vinyl horizontal siding, and all of the original window trim and surrounds have been either covered and/or removed. Existing tall narrow panel doors with transom light located at the NW elevation appear to be original. The original building facade exhibited a two-part facade composition with a distinct storefront level base and more accentuated cornice/cap. The original storefronts included traditional display and transom windows and a signage band that have been entirely covered and/or eliminated. The current entryways and retail openings include modern aluminum windows and small bubble-type awnings. A curved glass block wall and mahogany doors with brass detailing appear to date from exterior remodeling during the late 1940s. The distinctive raised (Mission Style) front parapet previously included a prominent "1903 BERTOLDI HALL" sign. The rear elevation includes a modern open stairway and non-historic window sash. The current condition of the interior or the presence of character defining interior features is not known.
