Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local).
First announced in 1907, plans for the new Providence Hospital finally got underway in 1908. The cornerstone was blessed in 1910. This hospital was first begun by three Sisters of Providence as an outgrowth fo their work in 1877 with patients of the County poorfarm. It figures significantly in the history of medical care in Seattle and is an important example of the work of Sommervell & Cote.
 
Appearance
This commanding 5 story building consumes the 500 block of 17th Avenue between East Jefferson and East Cherry Streets. It is characterized by a central tower facing west and a monument brick stack on the southeast corner of the complex. The building is dark red brick with masonry first floor and decorative masonry courses, cartouches and parapet caps. Although many additions have been made ot the hospital, it retains much of its eaerly 20th century character.
