This impressive home was built in 1907 by Sigismund Aronson, one of many Capitol Hill residents associated with the Schwabacher Brothers Hardware Company. The contractor was J. C. Redward. The house was called "The Glory of Capitol Hill" when completed in 1909, partly because its impressive entrance had been designed to be large enough to turn a coach with four horses. The Post-Intelligencer (9/15/1907, p. 7) featured a rendering of the planned house, noting its $25,000 cost, "all modern conveniences" and features such as a forty foot square "dancing hall" with a gallery for musicians, in the attic. Author Mary McCarthy was a niece of Mrs. Aronson and a frequent visitor. The Aronsons remained here until 1920. It was later a convent for nearby St. Joseph's School, from 1943 to 1960. It was noted as a landmark quality building in the city's 1970 historic resources survey.
