Significance |
|
This house was designed and built by owner Albert Hammarberg (4235 4th Ave. N. W.) and was erected in 1921. Hammarberg appears to be representative a a large number of small scale develop[er / designer / builders who worked in Seattle's north end between 1900 and 1930. The plan of the structure mirrors that of the house next door at 4528 2nd Ave. N. E., which was also built by Hammarberg. The house is intact and well maintained. It is significant by itself as a good example of the craftsman bungalow style but has additional significance because it is part of a two unit development which still possesses a high degree of integrity and has the ability to convey its significance.

Appearance |
This is a one story frame residence on a concrete foundation over a full basement (the Assessor's record for this property indicates that the basement was only a 3/4 basement in 1937). A wing extends the basic rectangular bungalow footprint to the north, giving the structure an "L" shaped floor plan. The basement garage in the wing is original (though the garage door appears to have been replaced. The low slope roof, the barge boards supported by triangular timber knee braces, the wide rectangular attic window in the front gable, the brick piers surmounted by battered wood porch roof supports at the entry, the four part window assemblies (located at entry elevation of the house and the street side of the wing) each featuring a long rectangular element over a nearly square central element with two flanking tall rectangular elements, the heavy wood porch railing, and the patterned shingle siding are all typical elements of the craftsman bungalow. A metal stair rail appears to have been added at the front entry. According to the permit history, a seismic upgrade was undertaken in 2003, though this is not apparent from the street. |
