Significance
This 1929 building, known as the Seville Building, was one of many Belltown structures designed by George Wellington Stoddard, for the Dakota Advertising Agency. Stoddard (1896-1967) entered into partnership with his father, Lewis M. Stoddard, following his graduation from the University of Illinois. Following his father’s death in 1929, he practiced alone until 1955, and then practiced in partnership with Francis Huggard. He designed larger homes, as well as apartment buildings, clinics, banks and other commercial structures. His best known works are Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center (1947) and the Green Lake Aqua Theater (1950). The Seville Building has had many uses over the years. It was a warehouse in the 1930s, and a store in the 1950s, with alterations by Bittman Adams and Sanders. It was probably at this time that the first floor windows were enlarged for display purposes. In 1962 it was reconfigured into classrooms for a school. It alter became a computer supply office and warehouse, restaurant and various office uses. Most alterations affected only the interior.
