Summary for 1643 S KING ST S / Parcel ID 3319501625 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Unknown Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1906

Significance
This house is an excellent example of a vernacular Queen Anne cottage and of late 19th/early 20th century vernacular housing. It contributes to our knowledge of the architectural and residential development of Seattle and it contributes to the historic streetscape. Further evaluation of this cottage may yield information regarding the rich ethnic heritage of this historically Japanese/American and Italian/American neighborhood. Since this cottage is identical to 1635 South King Street, which has a permit date of 1906, it can be assumed that this cottage was also built that year.

Appearance
This is a delightful vernacular interpretation of a one story Queen Anne cottage. It has a basic hipped roof box form elaborated with gable projections to the west and to the north. The projection to the north forms a three-sided bay window with decorative center window, which has harlequin pattern glass in the upper light. Other windows are one over one double hung wooden sash. The shallow gable is clad in decorative saw tooth, fish scale and square wooden shingles. The asymmetrical porch is hipped and supported by classical columns. Handrail is not historic. The front door has sidelights to match the decorative leaded glass window.
