This is the most ornate of a number of houses built on E. Crescent Drive by Charles Arensberg, presumably on speculation. No architect is indicated on the permit (#266567). This one was built in1927 and purchased by Alice Miller in 1928; she owned it at least through the 1930s. Crescent Drive is a steep street on the northeast part of Capitol Hill, above Montlake; the land is not platted. It was most likely slow to develop because of its steep grades and relative lack of streetcar access. However, the hill afforded good views to the east and north, and large middle-class homes were built during the 1920s. The 1937 tax assessor data for this house mentions interior features such as the “expensive and good” fixtures in the three baths, mahogany woodwork, brick and tile fireplace and extensive tilework in the baths and kitchen. The three garages were an unusual feature for the time.

| This large house sits high above the street, with a large rockery and three individual concrete garages at the street level. The style shows a general Mediterranean influence, with red brick cladding, a red clay tile roof and arcades with twisted columns. The house has a side-gable form with two large gables in front; each gable end has a square cartouche. The entry portico, in the center, has an unusual shape with a tall center arch flanked by lower arches, separated by twisted columns; the roof is clad with red clay tile. The oak door is flanked by large sidelights with art glass inserts. Above the entry is an arcaded balcony with three arches. Windows are primarily leaded glass. The first story has two large three-part windows; above each centre window is a large blind arch with swag ornamentation, probably in cast stone. Above are two groups of four casement windows. |
