Summary for 4064 1st AVE / Parcel ID 4206901650 / Inv #

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1924

Significance
This bungalow was built in 1924 by John C. Hill (2158 N. 50th St.) for owner Charles J. Olsen; the designer's name is unknown. This date places the period of construction at a time when the Wallingford neighborhood was enjoying its second building boom. The house appears to have replaced an earlier structure built in 1904 by Mr. Olsen. The permit history suggests that a garage was added to the property in 1927; however, it appears that the garage is no longer extant. The house seems to be intact and in excellent condition, and much of its detailing is typical of residential structures being built in the area in the mid 1920s

Appearance
The 1-1/2 story wood clad frame structure was built on a concrete foundation over a full basement. The projecting gabled porch featuring brick half columns supporting battered wood porch roof supports, the exposed rafter tails (now hidden by new gutters), the wide barge boards supported by wood braces, the end wall chimney flanked by two small windows, the "saddlebag" bay at the north elevation, and the three part window unit with divided lites in the upper sash and no muntins in the larger lower sash are all typical components of the late craftsman bungalows from this period. Storm windows appear to have been added and there may have been some minor modifications to the porch rail.
