The original building permit, obtained in 1909, was issued to the owner, R. E. Chinn, listing no other builder or architect. Later permits include a porch (7x19 feet) built in 1912 by contractor H.J. Allen, and a retaining wall in 1914, by another contractor, Law Anderson. In 1976 a deck was added and, in 1998, a two-car garage on the east side. The 1970s city-wide survey noted the exceptional detailing of this house, with leaded glass, jigsaw balusters and curved brackets.
Raleigh Chinn was president of Chinn Brothers Company, owners of timber lands. He was evidently interested in architecture, as he hired Ellsworth Storey to design a vacation home for him in 1905; this would have been one of Storey's earliest works. (This home was later remodeled by Roland Terry and described in House and Garden, August 1966.) From 1938 until 1953 the house was owned by Harry Manson, president of Manson Construction and Engineering Company, one of the area’s largest, and his wife Ingrid. Later owners included Benjamin Lezin, an engineer, and his wife Estelle (1950s); Harry Nyhus, a dentist, and his wife Anne (1960s); Gene Harmon, a photographer, and his wife Enge (1970s); and Brian Dempsey, president of University Savings Bank (1980s-90s).

| This distinctive house has a simple side gable form with elaborate Craftsman-influenced detailing. Cladding is wide horizontal boards with shingles on the south elevation. Two very wide belt courses separate the three stories, with shingle cladding between them. The roof has deep eaves with curved knee brackets and stepped brackets at the corners. There is a low shed roof dormer at the center of the main elevation, with three 12-light windows. The entry is in a recessed porch in the center of the north facade, with two round and three square columns and diamond-paned sidelights. Flanking the entry is a rounded bay on the west, with four diamond-paned windows, and four smaller windows on the east. Above the entry is a three-sided bay with a large center window, flanked by two pairs of windows. The most decorative part of the house is the west end, with two-story bay with an open porch on the third floor and another porch between two enclosed bays on the second floor. The porches have distinctive cut-out balustrades. The third floor and the second floor enclosed porch have multipaned casement windows. A clinker brick chimney is in the center of this elevation, extending through the porches. At the southwest is a corner bay with four six-light windows with diamond-paned transoms. The south elevation has a full-width open porch and a large newer picture window, flanked by 6/12 sash. Above is a gabled dormer with large brackets and a newer window. The east end of the house has a gabled enclosed porch, lower than the main gable, with banks of leaded windows (perhaps a sleeping porch); the area underneath is enclosed with lattice. |
