Historic Name: Morgan, N. E., House Common Name: 1728 Professional Building
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1905

Significance
This building illustrates the changes in Capitol Hill over the past century. When it was built in 1903, it was one of numerous mansions on Renton Hill, or Second Hill. Captain William Renton platted the top of the hill in the 1880s, clearing the land, grading the streets and setting out wooden sidewalks. Development began to flourish with the opening of the Madison Street cable car line about 1890. The spectacular views both east and west attracted many mansions and luxury apartments as well as more modest houses. By the 1930s, many of the large homes became institutions, just as happened to the west on First Hill. This became an “old people’s home,” and has been in office use since at least 1980. It remains one of the oldest buildings on Madison Street.

Appearance
The building has a side-gable form but with a complex roofline. A two-story circular turret is at one corner is matched with a square hip roofed cutout bay over a rounded first floor corner. In front, the roof swoops down from the ridgeline to shelter a projecting porch with square piers. The __ elevation has a pair of gabled dormers and a hexagonal first floor bay. Cladding is clapboard with a wide belt course separating the two stories. Windows are one-over-one sash, with leaded transoms on the bay.
