Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.
This is a particularly well-preserved historic property that appears to possess architectural and/or historic significance. This property is well maintained and exhibits no substantive changes/alterations to the exterior appearance/design character since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project.
(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner, builder or source of the house plan type of this residence has not been identified. Minnie S. Butterworth (wife of Chas. N. Butterworth, VP of Butterworth & Son Mortuary) is known to have owned the residence by 1935. It is not known whether she resided here or may have obtained it during the depression for investment purposes.

| (1997) A fairly well preserved example of a popular early 20th C. eclectic residential design derived from earlier Queen Anne cottage designs and reflecting Craftsman design influences. This particular house type was commonly constructed in the Seattle area, however its occurrence elsewhere in the American West or the US has yet to be determined. This particular example exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric that reflect popular residential design modes from the late 19th C. & early 20th C, including Queen Anne and Craftsman architectural styles: a one & ½ story form with flared hipped roof form distinguished by hipped wall dormers at all elevations, wide ornate bracketed eaves, a cut away entry porch, a bow bay window and a combination of standard double-hung and cottage type windows (some include ornamental diamond pattern sash). The house is clad with variegated siding: cedar clapboard and shingles and includes trim and architectural features that emphasize its horizontality. The design is further distinguished by unusual features drawn from the popular early 20th C. Craftsman and Colonial Revival designs: diamond windows and a heavy fluted column and bracketed porch post. With the exception of exterior door replacements there are no exterior alterations of note. This residence appears to have been constructed according to a (local?) architect designed builder’s plan or may possibly be an Aladdin type mail order catalog home. |
