Summary for 4869 Rainier AVE / Parcel ID 1702900870 / Inv #

Historic Name: Columbia Confectionary Common Name: The Wellington
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Columbia City
Built By: Year Built: 1928

Significance
The one story brick building was constructed in 1928 at a cost of $4000. The owner, M. Paul, ran a confectionary business. The subject building replaced an earlier frame building on the site, which also housed confectionary businesses, including Ervin E. Fraker’s confectionary beginning in 1910. The subject building became the location of the Columbia Confectionary under the ownership of Nick and Catherine Vamkros during the 1930s; the Vamkros lived on 46th Street across from the Whitworth School. Later businesses included several drug stores including Otto Richardson’s, Rainier Drug Store (owned by Bill Enslow) and Elmo’s Drug Store, which had a soda fountain. The Wellington, a restaurant, now occupies the storefront. The commercial building at 4869 Rainier Avenue South is significant as a well-preserved example of a small 1920s neighborhood commercial building.

Appearance
This intact commercial vernacular building is of masonry construction, with a rectangular plan, and is supported by a concrete foundation. The building has a flat roof with a slight parapet and simple cornice. The building is clad in solid brick and glazed tile. The single storefront consists of a central entry flanked by expansive glass windows. Transom windows, which have been replaced, run the length of the façade above a flat metal canopy. Although the entry and windows have been replaced, the configuration and tile cladding remain intact.
