Significance
This house is an excellent example of the work of Italian/American carpenter/contractor, Sam Catania. It contributes to our knowledge of the architectural and residential development of Seattle and it and its setting contribute to the historic streetscape. The history of this house and its owners enhances our knowledge of therich ethnic history of this traditionally Japanese/American and Italian/American neighborhood. This house was built for Camile Grossa, an Italian/American immigrant who came to Seattle ca. 1920. He worked as a construction laborer and bought an older house at this location. The Fioreta Brothers Contractors demolished the old house so that this hosue could be built in 1928. The upstairs bathroom was an "innovation" that Grossa insisted upon. The bathtub from the old house is in this bath. Catania first appears in City Directories as a shipworker in 1919. He is later listed as a carpenter and then contractor with his own company by 1930. By 1934 he is listed as a cabinetmaker. His houses evidence the skills of a cabinetmaker. He died ca. 1941.
