Significance |
|
This motel, originally known as the Towne Motel, was designed by architect Douglas Vicary for University Enterprises. It was built in 1957-58, a period of intensive motel development in this vicinity. This area was ideally located between Aurora Avenue (SR 99) and downtown Seattle, so owners could take advantage of the popularity of auto travel following the austerity of the Depression and World War II. These blocks had been regraded just as the Depression began, so little development had occurred and property was considerably less expensive than downtown, so that parking and landscaping could be provided.

Appearance |
This motel differs from many of the period in that it has interior hallways rather than open walkways. Parking is below the building. Cladding is primarily concrete block, with stone on the street façade. Some of the windows have been replaced with more modern sash. A mansard-style roof with an unusual curved concrete corbel detail has been added, as well as a new entry canopy. A greenhouse-style restaurant addition has been constructed at the southeast part of the façade. |
