Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman, Colonial - Colonial Revival Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1908

Significance
This house was built in 1908 according to the King County Property Record Card (1937) and in 1906 according to the King County Assessor Property Characteristics Report (accessed in 2005). Christine Carr, in her thesis entitled "The Seattle Houses of Ellsworth Storey: Frames and Patterns," identified this house as one of three structures designed by Ellsworth Storey in the Wallingford neighborhood. A two car terraced garage was located at the site by 1937. It appears the house had been owned by Charles and Leone Dow since 1933 when the Assessor surveyed the property in 1937. The house was purchased by Robert S. Schlorell in 1964and then by the current owner, Richard L. Langer, in 1966.

Appearance
This is a two story, stucco clad frame residence built over a full basement on a concrete foundation. The gambrel roof with close rake is a feature typically associated with the colonial revival architecture that became popular after the First World War. However, the placement and design of the entry porch are more typical of the craftsman foursquare housing being built in the neighborhood in the first two decades of the 20th Century. The original shingle siding may have already been replaced in kind when the Assessor surveyed the house in 1937; the photograph made that year shows a minimized window trim profile more often associated with siding conversions and later ranch style work. At some point between 1937 and 1958, the shingle cladding was removed and replaced with stucco. In recent years, nearly all the original windows have been replaced with vinyl sash.
