Summary for 4746 2nd AVE / Parcel ID 8818400530 / Inv #

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1919

Significance
According to the building permit this house was designed by the owner, V, Ramaglia (4823 38th Ave. N. E.). While it is possible that Ramaglia was capable of taking on this work, it is perhaps more likely that stock plans were purchased or the house was built from drawings in one of the popular plan books being soldat the time by ambitious by designer / builders. The house was erected in 1919 just after World War I and at the beginning of Wallingford's second construction boom. A builder's name is not listed on the permit and and so it is possible that the house was built by the owner himself, or by tradesmen hired directly by the owner rather than by a merchant builder. A garage was added to the site by the owner in 1920. The house is significant as an intact example of a rectangular, cross gabled, craftsman bungalow built towards the end of the bungalow's period of popularity.

Appearance
This is a 1-1/2 story wood clad frame residence on a concrete foundation over a full basement. The moderately sloped roof, the barge boards supported by triangular timber knee braces, and the small horizontally oriented rectangular attic window in the front gable are all typical craftsman bungalow details. The projecting front porch is characterized by half-height masonry piers surmounted by square built-up wood columns supporting a gabled porch roof at the entry. The wood porch railing appears original. The ganged double hung windows at the front elevation each feature a large undivided lower sash and a smaller upper sash divided into tall rectangualr lites by equally spaced vertical muntins. A "saddlebag" bay with shed roof projects from the south elevation. Several of the basement openings appear to have been modified suggesting that the basement may have been altered. The top of the chimney also appears to have been altered.
