Significance
This building is unusual for its range of disparate uses and extensive alterations over the past 80 years. It was built in 1926 as an auto repair garage, with striking tall arched windows and doors and a red clay tile roof. It was altered in 1947 to be a distribution warehouse and again in 1961 as a finance office. It was later purchased by the Archdiocesan Housing Authority for the Matt Talbot Center, which offers programs to stop substance abuse. In 2003 five additional stories were added to the one-story base and on the adjacent parking lot, providing housing for substance abuse and homeless clients. The building, designed by Environmental Works, is the first LEED certified affordable housing project in the country. (Source: www.eworks.org/traugottcasecontent.htm)
