The building was designed and constructed in 1927 to house the College Center Inc., comprising nine specialty shops catering to women. The shops included a lending library, a tearoom, gift shop, women’s apparel, millinery, lingerie and toiletries departments. College Center Inc. was located on the second floor, while four separate establishments, including the University Music and Radio Store, were located on the first floor. The College Center Building was designed by McClelland and Pinneh and won honors in a statewide architectural competition.
Seattle architects McClelland and Pinneh had their offices within the University District. Other buildings designed by McClelland and Pinneh included the Silverstrom Building, Seattle Office Equiopment Company, and Puget Sound Savings and Loan in downtown Seattle and the Dr. Hampson house in the Ravenna neighborhood.

Appearance |
This 1927 two-story building is of reinforced concrete construction with cast stone siding on the north and west elevations. The entablature is extremely intricate, exhibiting many shields surrounded by a floral motif. The second story windows are fixed plate glass windows flanked by narrow openable windows inspired by the Chicago style. The canopys have been replaced with similar modern versions. The storefront is fairly intact, but includes some new windows. |
