Historic Name: Hoff, Martha, House Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman, Vernacular Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1904

Significance
This is a relatively early house for the area, built in 1904 by a carpenter, Peter Martinson, probably on speculation. The first identified owner is Mrs. Martha Hoff, who purchased it in 1917 and appears to have owned it until 1938. In later years, it had many owners, including a salesman, a Boeing employee, an auto salesmen and retirees. The house is notable for its early date, its highly intact condition and the decorative shingles on the main façade. A detached garage was constructed in the 1970s and the basement was improved to add a new dwelling unit in 1998.

Appearance
This early house has a simple front-gabled form, with hipped dormers on the side elevations. The small entry porch at the southeast corner has a flared hip roof supported by two square wooden columns and a balustrade of square wood posts and three wooden stairs. Cladding is clapboard to the top of the porch, with a wide belt course above the first story windows and a wooden water table. Above the porch is shingles with a elaborate pattern of shingles extending up to the top of the gable. The primary window on the first story has a leaded glass transom; the second story has a pair of one-over-one wood windows, flanked by two small diamond-paned (wood) windows. An auxiliary dwelling unit has been added in the basement at the rear.
