Summary for 5015 Rainier AVE / Parcel ID 5649600133 / Inv #

Historic Name: Columbia Lumber Company Common Name:
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Columbia City
Built By: Year Built: 1926

Significance
The one story frame building was constructed c.1918-20 as the office for the Columbia Lumber Company. The Columbia Lumber Company had been located one lot north, at 5001 Rainier Avenue S., since 1912. Additions were made to the building in 1926 and 1928. A lumber company remained on the site through the mid-1950s, known at various times as S.A. Foster Lumber and the Rainier Lumber Company. The frame building at 5015 Rainier Avenue S. is now a liquor store. The aubject building was built very cheaply circa 1918 as a lumber company office. It is interesting that it remains intact and outlived the lumber businesses it housed, to be used now as a retail store. It lost its architectural integrity due to successive additions over the years. It is historically significant as an extant example of an early retail use (lumber supply) once common in the Rainier Valley.

Appearance
This commercial building is of wood frame construction and is supported by a post and beam foundation. The building has a rectangular plan and a front gable roof. The front gable features decorative bargeboard trim. The building is clad in board and batten siding. The fenestration consists of a large bank of windows with a door on the north end of the front elevation. Several windows are located on the side elevations but have been partially covered with plywood. The storefront has undergone extensive alterations; diagonal board siding now almost entirely covers the original storefront.
