This house, like the house at 1206 Republican street next door (to the west), dates from 1890. It has a long history and has been subject to a series of accretions over time. It was originally clad with wood shingles and had a wraparound porch. It was remodeled in 1940 and appears to have not been touched since that time. This is one of the earliest houses dating from the early settlement of Cascade and the Lake Union area. It also forms part of a virtually uninterrupted row of remaining single family houses that runs from this house along Republican St west, past Fairview Avenue into the “Westlake area.” This row of early single family houses, mostly outside Cascade, is remarkable within the context of the South Lake Union area, where most single family houses have been demolished.

Appearance
This single family house has a ground floor and attic, a rectangular plan with small porch entry to the west and a lower gabled addition in the rear. Its main street elevation faces Republican street and consists of a double window at the attic level over a three part window at the ground level. The roof is an asymmetrical gable, a modified saltbox shape, with the lower pitched portion of the gable roof cut off, so that it does not sweep close to the ground. The house is clad in composition shingle/ “paper brick.”
