Significance |
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local). |
|
This ambitious Queen Anne house retains significant identifying detail and is unique in South Park. In its prominent location at 8th and Southern, this house is one of only a few early houses that survive near South Park's first streetcar terminus at 8th and Kenyon.
It is possible that J. A. Merreatt, who took title to this property in November of 1908, was the first owner. (1904-1905 Sanborn Map)

Appearance |
This prominent house is located at the northeast corner of Eighth Avenue and Southern and had proches addressing both streets. The Southern Street façade is greatly altered by the porch enclosure. The Eighth Avenue façade retains its unusual bell cast porch tucked into the slope of a steep gable. True to Queen Anne dictates, no surface of this house is unadorned. Three types of decorative wood shingles an narrow beveled siding cover the house. Gable and hip rooflines converge to form the irregular mass. Spoolwork decorates the gable. Alterations associated with converting the house to apartment use have severely damaged its integrity, but it and its setting nevertheless contribute to the historic streetscape. |
