This large house is an American Foursquare or Classic Box, one of the most popular house forms built in Seattle from 1900 to 1910, a period which saw a tripling of the city’s population. The architect of this house are not known, but it was probably built for John A. Whalley and his wife Clara, listed at this address in 1908. Whalley (1863-1912), born in England, moved to San Francisco as child and to Seattle in 1883. He served as secretary to Leigh Hunt, owner of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, becoming the company treasurer in 1897. He then established his own insurance and real estate company; a street near the top of the eastern hill in Magnolia is named for him. He was prominent in the community, serving in the legislature in 1908 and in the state senate in 1910, before his death in 1912. His widow remained here until at least the 1950s. In the 1960s-70s it was owned by Clyde and Glo Holcomb.
The house has had some minor alterations, including a detached garage (1918; rebuilt 2000), a small addition to the kitchen in the northeast corner (1977), a second-floor porch on the southeast (1999); and a rear deck and new entry (2003). The original tall chimney has been reduced in height.

| Appearance |
| This house is basically a hip-roofed Foursquare in form, with some variations. It is slightly irregular in plan, with a section protruding at the northeast. The recessed porch on the west end of the main façade has a roup of three smooth round columns at the corner, and four others. A group of three six-over-one windows is to the east. The front (south) and west elevations each have a hip-roof dormer with prominent curved brackets and a pair of six-light casement windows. The hip roof has very deep boxed eaves; the corners of the second floor are cut away with over-sized cross-braces supporting the eaves. A porch with a plain balustrade has been added across the second floor, with French doors replacing some of the original 12-over-one second floor windows. |
