The King County Property Characteristic Report, accessed in 2004, indicates that this house was built in 1901. At the time of its construction, the roadway onto which it faces was known as Kilbourne Street. It was renamed North 36th Street in 1918. If a permit was issued for construction of this building, it has not yet been located. As a result, the initial owner, design and builder are not yet known.
A wood shed was built at the site for owner Donald W. Roberts in September and October 1920 (permit # 195262). An existing garage was wrecked and a new garage built at the site for Roberts between May and September 1925 (permit #244866).
Another permit was issued in April 1932 (#304388). This permit allowed the residence to be converted to a two family dwelling. The owner at the time, Norman Anderson, listed his address on the building permit as 3610 Wallingford, the address of an apartment building located on the same “L” shaped parcel as the house. The listing for Anderson in the 1935 edition of Polk’s Seattle Directory notes that he lived in and managed the Don Roberts Apartments and also was involved with radio repair.
A permit was issued in August 1937 (#324262) to make repairs to the residence without undertaking structural changes. This work was completed later that month for owner N. Schultsor; the contractor was E. J. Bragg, Inc.
By the early 1960s, the duplex was owned by Cloris Waskey, who replaced the existing furnace with an electric heating appliance in 1962. As noted above, the duplex shared the parcel on which it stood with a small apartment building. The west end of the “L” shaped parcel was the site of the apartment building (located at 3610 Wallingford Avenue N.) and the south end of the parcel was the site of the house (at 1808 N. 36th Street). The property was short platted in 1984 by Waskey to separate the apartment building on Wallingford (Parcel A) from the house on N. 36th Street (Parcel B). The following year, Waskey upgraded the electrical service at the house.
The current owner, Eric H. LaGuardia, acquired the duplex from Cloris Waskey in 1986
The house is significant as a surviving and relatively intact structure built in the initial two decades of the neighborhood’s development. It predates Seattle’s first north end building boom, which for Wallingford began about 1905, and also predates the craftsman bungalow style, which became popular about the same time.

| Appearance |
| This structure is a 1-1/2 story clapboard and shingle clad frame residence over what appears to be a half basement on a poured concrete foundation. The moderately sloped gable roof with enclosed soffits, the pent at the base of the front facing gable, the mixed shingle and clapboard siding, the built up casings at the tops of the windows, the relatively slender full height wood columns at the inset front porch that extends across the entire front of the house, and the hip roofed sidewall dormer are all features typically associated with late Queen Anne cottages. Despite the conversion to duplex use in the early 1930s, few significant modifications are apparent. |
