Significance

This property was constructed between 1955 and 1956, according to the King County Assessor, as the Queen Anne branch of the National Bank of Commerce in the Uptown neighborhood. As of 2018, the building continues to function as a bank, now a Bank of America branch. Seattle architect George W. Stoddard (1895–1967) designed the building.

Appearance

Constructed between 1955 and 1956, this concrete block structure is located at the northwest corner of Mercer Street and First Avenue W. The building at 100 W Mercer Street was constructed as a branch office of the National Bank of Commerce. The building features elements of the Googie and Modern architectural styles and has a flat roof with parapet. The one-and-a-half-story building stands on a poured concrete foundation and has a primarily square plan with a drive-thru projection on its west elevation. The building’s site slopes slightly down to the west. The building is clad in concrete block, which features a parged and scored finish, and Roman brick. The windows consist of aluminum storefront windows. The east elevation windows are enframed by projecting concrete rectangle, forming the headers and sills for the windows. A three-story vertical pillar is present on the building’s main (south) elevation and provides advertising surface to the east and west. The pillar presently advertises the building’s current tenant, Bank of America. A drive-thru banking window is present on the west elevation; a flat roof canopy, 1-story tall, projects out from the drive-thru window to shelter cars.
