This Italian Renaissance house is notable for its prominent siting above Lake Union, its large size and its detailing. It was built in 1927 for Kenneth and Mary Stewart, whose family remained here until the 1960s. Stewart was a building contractor who built a number of houses on Queen Anne. The current owner purchased the house in the 1970s. The original architect is not known, although recent additions are well documented. Alterations have been made at the rear, adding a swimming pool and a two-story addition with a loggia (by Bumgardner Architects, 1987), and adding a rounded terrace above the garage on the front façade (1989).

Appearance |
This house is clad with brownish brick with extensive terra cotta trim. It has a hipped roof with deep eaves and modillions. The small arched entry porch is to the south of the main (east) façade, set back from the front corner. A double garage is along the front, on the lower floor; the garage has been extended slightly, with a rounded terrace added on top. French doors set in a brick arch open to the terrace; similar brick arches are on the second floor. Two arched dormers have been added to the east elevation. Windows are primarily large panes with eight-light transoms. |
