|
The McLaughlin/Von Hein House was constructed about 1905. By the summer of 1904 realtor George and David Taggart, who owned a significant portion of the York Addition, established a real estate office in the subdivision and started to sell their holdings. The following year the Taggarts sold one and a half lots to Kansas native William McLaughlin. Turn of the century booming Washington had likely drawn butcher Wiliam and his wife Stela McLaughlin to Seatte who, within a year of their arrival, acquired the property and built a house. They moved into their new house in late 1905 or early 1906. One or two years after the 1909 death of Stella McLaughlin, widower McLaughlin sold the residence to Bruno and Ida Von Hein. The Von Heins had not lived in the city long when they moved into the house where they remained until the Depression. During most of the 1930s they were away from Seattle. Bruno, a marine engineer, may have lived and worked on ships. In 1939, the Von Heins moved back into the house and lived there for a few more years. By the end of World War II they sold out and moved from Seattle.
The McLaughlin/Von Hein House appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (over 100 years old) and minimal alterations.
