Historic Name: Phillips House Common Name: Phillips House
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Columbia City

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
The Phillips House was constructed about 1904. By late winter 1904, Wisconsin native Ambrose Phillips (b. ca 1861) and wife Harriet (b. ca 1864) arrived Seattle. Ambrose Phillips, a building contractor and carpenter, moved from Oregon to take advantage of Seattle's building boom. Soon after arriving, the Phillips purchased a one acre tract of land south of Seattle City Limits in Brighton Beach. Ambrose likely built the house during his spare time and finished it during 1904 or in early 1905. The couple moved in with their daughter Marie (b. ca 1895). Ambrose Phillips continued to ply his trade until the beginning of World War I when the Philips moved out of town. From 1924 until the early 1940s, Edward and Grace Walsted lived in the house. In the 1920s Edward worked as a millwright and mechanic. The Phillips House appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (over 100 years old) and minimal alterations.

Appearance
The Phillips House is a Queen Anne style side gable house. Two story cupola and a recessed porch on north elevation. Three sided bay window on west elevation. Small one story addition on south elevation.
