The E. Smith House was built in 1901 and enlarged in 1902. Egbert Smith (1864-ca. 1939), born and raised in Pennsylvania, in 1891 moved to Illinois and married Emma Smith (b. 1871). They lived in Ilinois long enough to have two children, daughter Corinne (b. 1891) and son Lesle (b. 1893). Shortly after the Smiths moved to Seattle, they purchased a Beacon Hill lot, and Egbert Smith constructed a house.
The November 1900 building permit (#5638) listed Smith as the builder. Smith likely completed the 20 x 20 foot one story residence in early 1901. The following year he built a 26 x 28 foot one and a half story addition (permit # 15357) to the house which was completed in 1902. Although Smith submitted the house plans, there is no evidence that he was an architect.
The Smiths would reside in the house for over 50 years. By 1910 Egbert Smith changed trades and became a plumber. After his death about 1939, his wife continued to reside in the house until about 1953.
The E. Smith House appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (over 100 years old) and minimal alterations.
