Summary for 4023 4th AVE / Parcel ID 4206901150 / Inv #

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Tudor - Cottage Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1929

Significance
This tudor cottage was designed and built by the owner, A. J. Allen & Son (6510 17th Ave. N. E.). Construction was completed in 1929 as the second north end building boom began to wind down. The tudor cottage became popular in the years following World War I and a number were constructed in the Wallingford neighborhood, including several by the design / built team that put up this one. The structure is significant as an intact local representative of the tudor style in its most basic cottage form.

Appearance
The building permit was issued in 1928 for a one story frame residence on a concrete foundation over a full basement, though the attic was clearly intended to be used as living space and had been finished been 1937 if not by the time construction work was completed in 1929. The steeply sloped roof and brick façade are typical features of the tudor cottage style. The tall street-side gable is the most commanding element of the house; however, the structure is actually a side gabled rectangle and the side gables would have been more prominent than the street side gable if they were not clipped. Although the crossed gables suggest an "L" shaped footprint, the building is actually rectangular. Other "tudor" elements include the diamond lite pattern in several of the windows, the small enclosed porch with its arched opening to the entry stairs, the close cornice and close rake (I.e., no overhang), and wood clad dormer. The large picture windows lighting the main rooms at the entry level are another common feature. The basement garage is original to the structure. There are no obvious modifications to the building
