This rather entertaining house was built in 1926 for Albert Hamback and his wife Hermina, but the architect is not known. Albert died in the early 1930s, but his widow remained in the house until the 1940s, when it was purchased by Louis and Ethel Blumenthal, owners of a wholesale menswear company. Lewis and Genevieve Horton (Horton Insurance Agency) bought the house in the 1970s, and Mrs. Horton lived here until the 1990s.

Appearance |
This 2-1/2 story house is an unusual expression of the English Cottage variant of the Tudor style. Cladding is stucco on the upper levels, with multicolored (red and tan) brick on the first story. The roof is clad with red clay tile. The houses massing is quite vertical, with a side-gabled form with a clipped gable at the south end. The entry, in the center of the east facade, has an enclosed vestibule with a very steep gabled roof and a round arch. The arched oak door is notable, with three carved panels and a round art glass window. The same design is seen in the transom of the primary window, a large three-part sash with an arched transom. Above the entry is a pair of small arched art glass windows; to the south is a three-sided hanging bay with three windows. North of the entry is a steep front-facing clipped gabled section (two stories) with a pair of one-over-one windows set into blind arched with ornamentation above. The north façade has a two-story faceted turret-like bay with leaded glass windows, above the entry to the basement garage. |
