Built in 1913, the property was owned by Prentice Reality Company in 1917, according to tax records. Polk directories indicate Alex R. and Jennie P. McLeod lived in the property from ca 1924 through 1941. Mr. McLeod was president-secretary of Wainright and McLeod Inc. in 1923. In April of 1925 a garage addition was constructed. The building is also refered to as the Old Colony Apartments from 1925 through 1936. In June of 1931, repairs were undertaken to the roof to correct $400 worth of fire damage. At this time M. S. Prentice owned the building. By 1941, Yena Prentice lived in the building. From 1949 through ca 1953, Morinosuke Imayanagita lived in the building. George M. Ima (likely also known as Morinosuke Imayanagita) occupied the building from 1955 through 1970.
Beacon Hill is a long north-south tending ridge located southeast of downtown Seattle and stands 350 feet at its highest point. The hill’s steep topography deterred substantial Euro-American settlement through the early 1880s. Then, development of the area was stimulated by the introduction of streetcar lines in the 1890s, its proximity to Seattle’s main industrial area to the west, and the regrading of the hill’s north end in the early 1900s.
Originally acquired by the City in 1898, Jefferson Park was integrated into Seattle’s Olmsted system of parks, and the Olmsted Brothers prepared a plan for the park in 1912. The first public golf course west of the Mississippi opened at Jefferson Park in 1915. Jefferson Park has exerted a profound positive influence on the development of the Beacon Hill neighborhood.
Because of its proximity to the International District, Japanese and Chinese families moved to Beacon Hill starting in the 1920s. World War I and II stimulated a surge in housing development associated with wartime industry. The construction of Interstate 5 in the 1960s and Interstate 90 in the 1980s sliced through the neighborhoods and contributed to Beacon Hill’s relative isolation. Today, Beacon Hill is an ethnically diverse working class community, which has a mixed Asian, Chicano, African American, and Caucasian population.

| Built in 1913, this massive, Craftsman-influenced, American Foursquare style, single-family dwelling stands on a rectangular lot. The building is oriented to Thirteenth Avenue South on a flat site elevated 4’ above street level. This 1461 square foot, two-and-a-half story house with a half daylight basement features an essentially square plan, measuring 35’ by 39’, with a 36’ by 8’ full facade front porch. A poured concrete foundation supports the wood frame, concrete/asbestos shingle-clad superstructure. Asphalt composition roofing covers the pyramidal hip roof. Overhanging eaves with exposed, decoratively cut rafters define the roofline. A grouping of four 1:1 with decorative six-lite transom windows on either side of the main entrance provides day lighting on the front facade. Prominent 6:6 wood sash, double hung windows provide day lighting on the second story. Six-lite casement windows over the second story balcony provide day lighting to the second story spaces. An added metal railing wraps around the balcony. Two direct flights of stairs lead from the street to the main entrance. Sidelights flank the main doorway. Brick piers carry the second story balcony. Contemporary gutters and downspouts provide drainage. |
