This house was erected 1922. It was designed and built by the owner, the firm of N. A. Nelson & Sons, a building contractor located at 3842 Stone Way according to the permit application. The King County Property Record Card for this property suggests that it was owned by the Salvation Army when it was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937 and had been acquired by that organization in 1925.
The structure was built as a one-story residence; however, it appears the attic was already being used as living space in 1937. The basement garage at the west end of the north elevation is original.
This structure is significant because it is an intact and well maintained combination of colonial revival and craftsman bungalow characteristic built in the middle of Seattle’s second north end building boom, a period during which a very eclectic approach to the design of small houses was in vogue.

| Appearance |
| This is a 1-1/2 story, clapboard-clad frame residence on a concrete foundation over a full basement. The placement and detailing of the entry and porch, the enclosed soffits, and the cornice returns at the gable ends are typical elements of colonial revival design. However, the massing of the residence, the detailing of the windows, and the low slope of the roof are all suggestive of craftsman bungalow work.
The entry and the related gabled porch are more-or-less centered in the front (east) elevation (a gabled floor plan extension at the north end of the structure puts the entry slightly off center to the south). The portico, with its pediment and barrel vaulted soffit, is supported at the outside corners by wood posts that, despite their square cross section, display a noticeable degree of entasis. To either side of the entry is a large fixed window flanked by two casements windows with rectangular lights in a 5 x 2 pattern.
A battered chimney is centered in the face of a gabled bay that extends toward the cross street from the eastern end of the north façade. Two tall casements windows, similar to those in the front elevation, flank the chimney. In the gable, paired casements are each divided in a 3 x 2 pattern. Just west of the bay at the main level are a pair of double-hung units. The upper sash of each of these windows is divided in a 2 x 3 pattern. A similar double-hung unit is located by itself at the west end of the elevation and a garage door provides access to the basement at the west end of the basement level below.
A single double-hung window, similar to those at the north façade, is located at the north end of the back (west) wall of the house. Another is located nearer the center of the elevation. Two smaller windows are located further to the south and two wide rectangular windows light the basement.
The rear porch and steps were rebuilt in 1964-65 according to the permit record. However, this reconstruction work may have had to have been repeated in the late 1970s. A fire restoration was undertaken in 1978-80. The current state of the building suggests that this work occurred at the south end of the structure. Several of the windows at the south elevation have been replaced with units that do not have true divided lights. In fact, at the middle of the south elevation, three new double-hung windows have replaced the original group of two windows and a pair of kitchen vent openings. The double-hung wood window originally located in the south gable has been replaced with a metal unit. The gabled bay that extends into the side elevation near the west end of the south façade has been altered by the addition of a shed-roofed extension and the remaining window of the bay has been replaced.
With the exception of the numerous changes at the south elevation, no significant modifications are apparent. |
