Historic Name: Wist, William, House Common Name: Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Capitol Hill Built By: Year Built: 1901   Significance This simple vernacular house was built in 1901, one of the oldest remaining houses in the vicinity. The narrow windows are an indication of the age of the house. The mansard roof is an unusual feature in Seattle. The first identified owner was W. H. Wist, who purchased it in 1924. In 1957, it was re-clad with imitation brick, which has been removed and the shingles restored or replaced in kind. The window detail has also been restored, but the porch has a flat roof rather than the original arched hood.   Appearance This small house has a mansard roof with a hip dormer on the street façade. Cladding is alternating bands of narrow and wide wood shingle. The entry is on the west side, with a flat-roofed porch with a turned post, a plain balustrade and wood steps. Behind this is hip-roofed three-sided bay with four windows. The front façade has two pairs of narrow one-over-one sash with a narrow wood cornice above. In between is a single small multipaned window; two other small windows are on the basement level. The other elevations have one-over –one windows.
