This structure may have been built earlier than 1900, the date of construction indicated in the King County Assessor Property Characteristics Report and on the King County Property Record Card. A permit (#5651) was issued in 1900 for an addition to an existing structure. It is not known if the structure being expanded had been built that same year or some time earlier.
The house was raised and placed on a new foundation in 1919 by owner C. R. West (permit #175538). West, a boilermaker, and his wife Olive appear to have lived at the house until at least 1935
The property was apparently acquired by a new owner, Thomas C. Werner, at some point between 1919 and 1937, according to the Assessor’s records. However, it appears that Werner did not live at the house. In 1938, the house was vacant.
Andrew Forsgren and his wife appear to have acquired the house in 1940. Forsgren began a garage addition to the property in 1944, although the Assessor’s record seems to indicate that there was a small garage located in the basement at the time. The work began under one permit (#363718) but was completed with some additional work (and for a different owner) under another.
A substantial remodel in 1946 (completed under permit #370519, which continued the garage permit) added a new west wing on a concrete masonry unit (CMU) foundation. This work was completed by a new owner, C. L. Wright. The east wing appears to have been truncated at about the same time. Combined with the garage addition, this work resulted in a much-modified building footprint. The spindle work at the remaining front porch was probably simplified at this time; photographs indicate that these modifications occurred at some point between 1937 and 1946.
The building was resided between 1946 and 1952 with a wide lapped siding material, probably cement asbestos siding; however, the cladding has been returned to a state closer to its original appearance in recent years.
Frederick C. Millward and his wife appear to have acquired the property in 1963 and lived there into the mid 1970s.
Some electrical work was completed by the current owner, Jorge Marrero, in early 1982, though he did not purchase the house from the prevuous owner, Dallas L. Stone, until the following year.
Nyberg and Steinbrueck identified this structure as a building significant to the Wallingford community. Traces of the original structure remain, exemplifying to a degree the typical detailing of the late Queen Anne style cottages that populated the neighborhood in the first two decades of its development. However, extensive changes have brought Nyberg and Steinbruecks assessment into question.

Appearance |
This is a 1-1/2 story clapboard and shingle clad frame residence over a half basement on a combination of poured concrete, concrete masonry unit and post and pier foundations. Relatively steep gable roofs with enclosed soffits combined with a hipped porch roof, slender stick railings and support posts at the front porch, and tall narrow windows, all reminiscent of the late Queen Anne cottage style, a mode of housing that was popular in the first two decades of the neighborhoods development. Numerous modifications over the years have muddled the original character of this structure. |
