Historic Name: Occidental Mall Common Name: Occidental Mall
Style: Modern Neighborhood: Pioneer Square
Built By: Year Built: 1972

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local).
Like Occidental Park, Occidental Mall dates from after the Pioneer Square Preservation District's periods of significance, but contributes to the urban design quality of the district. Occidental Mall was created in 1972, when the City of Seattle commissioned Jones & Jones Architects Landscape Architects to restore Pioneer Place and the historic pergola and create Occidental Park. Occidental Mall, also designed by Ilze Jones, was part of a spine tying Pioneer Place to Occidental Park and to Occidental Mall, constituting a cohesive array of open spaces and buildings. Because this is a fairly recent work, it is not contributing; however, it is significant as a public place in the district . Like Occidental Park, this work by Ilze Jones and the firm of Jones & Jones should be considered historically significant in the in the years to come.

Appearance
South of Occidental Park, Occidental Avenue South from Main Street to Jackson Street was closed off and paved in brick and transformed into a pedestrian mall. A single row of trees was placed at each side (west and east) of the open space.
